story gallery services flowers advice

A gift of flowers is always a pleasant surprise, and it would be great to make it last as long as possible.

The following recommendations may help you extend the life of and healthy appearance of your flowers:

  1. Arrangements in vases:
    • to promote flower opening in roses and lilac (or any other flowers with wooden stem), cut the stem with sharp pruning shears and place them in warm water;
    • keep the water clean by changing it every other day;
    • use flower food. Certain varieties of cut flowers last longer then others. Carnations, gladiolas, peonies remain vibrant for long periods if advised care is taken;
    • keep your flower arrangements in a cool spot (65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit; 18 to 22 degrees Celsius), away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling fans, TV’s or radiators;
    • if possible, re-cut the stems by removing one to two inches with sharp knife. Before placing your flowers back in the fresh water, rinse the tips of stems under running water to wash off any glazy residue.

  2. Arrangements in floral foam (tight container, box or basket)
    • You can add small amounts of water by pouring it into the middle of your arrangement, closer to the base of the flower stems.

  3. Orchid care tips:
    • Orchids don’t need much light, therefore try to always keep them out of direct sunlight, as it will burn the leaves and blossoms. During the period of bloom they can be kept in regular in-door light, after the orchid is finished blooming, place it in bright indirect sunlight to ensure new growth.
    • Water once a week
    • Ideal indoor temperature for orchids – 63-80ºF
